Memorial weekend 2008

We had our campsites reserved at Storm Lake, and wouldn't you know it, rain..... We had planned on leaving early Saturday morning, early... but with lightening and hard rain, we all decided to wait and see if it would quit. Rick and Patti Harvey and Stan and Tammy Hyer were already camping, went up on Friday afternoon.

We decided to take off about 10:00 a.m. as the rain became sprinkles. We(Steve and Connie) met Pam and Bob Beverage and John and Rosalee and headed northwest. We ran out of the rain and had cool temps and wind. When we arrived at Storm Lake the weather was much nicer. We set up camp and rode around the lake. When we returned, Randy Nelson and Jen Lipe arrived and set up camp. Everyone went out to eat to Celebrate Patti and Tammy's birthdays. We found a Mexican restaurant, had dinner. At the end, they brought out ice cream on sopapillas. As the girls were handed their plate, they also receive a large tablespoon full of whipped cream in the face! Not sure where that came from.. Of all the Mexican restaurants we have been at, that is a first! We cruised the main street of Storm Lake and headed back to the campground for a nice fire.

Sunday was going to be a big question about whether some of us stayed. Severe storms were in the forecast but it sounded like it might be ok there. We had breakfast and sat around and visited. In the afternoon we decided to go for a ride. It was a cool breeze off the lake but as we left the campground could feel it warm up. Our destination was The Grotto at West Bend. As we rode, the temperature began to warm up. We enjoyed a tour at The Grotto and decided to head back to camp. We had seen something in Rolfe, Iowa, that we wanted to check out a little more.

It is the World's largest Clydesdale Rocking horse. It was amazing how tall and life-like it looks.

Of course, we all wanted to get a close up look. Jen, with a boost, was able to sit on the horse and it rocks quite easily. The hobby horse was made for the children and grandchildren but has become quite the tourist attracter. He also has a big three story barn that was built with a lot of stuffed animals and Budweiser collectables, truly a man's retreat. .

There is a web site... http://www.budbarn.com/

As we left for camp, temps were in the 90's and we heard reports of possible tornados south and east of us.

We enjoyed a cookout with lots of food, friendship and a campfire. Still no rain.

We got up Sunday, had breakfast together and began to tear down camp and head for home. This was the first time for John and Rosalee to camp in their camper and Bob and Pam have a new tent that is nice and roomy. It even has a closet!

Weather was in the 70's with some wind, as we headed home. We had beautiful weather for our Memorial Weekend.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those at Parkersburg that lost their homes, belongings and to those that lost family members to the tornados.

We remember and honor those that have lost their lives or passed on, on this Memorial Day, 2008.
