Kansas City Spring Fling

10 members of Chapter H, Friendship Riders of Iowa, left Friday afternoon, April 18th, yes in the rain, and rode to Watkins Mill State Park in Missouri. Bill had some problems with something coming off the road or one of the trucks driving by, during the heavy rain, skimming off his windshield and helmet and broke off his CB antenna. He is very glad to have had a tall windshield and his new full face helmet!! We set up camp in a misty rain in the dark.
When we got up Saturday morning, the rain had stopped and things were beginning to dry off and slowly warm up.
We had breakfast at a very interesting place that looked like an old house that was converted into a restaurant, Sarah's Table in Kearney. Very good! Really good home made cinnamon rolls. We rode to Weston Bend shelter house and park where GWTA Kansas City Tour Riders held their 3rd Spring Fling. Riders divided into 3 groups after registering and we followed our guide. At several stops we would draw a poker chip with a number and then went on. We went through St Joseph, MO, through a park, had a quick lunch, visited Paradise, and then back to the starting place. We had our bikes blessed by CMA and then there was a bike show. Afterwards, we enjoyed some awesome BBQ, and all the fixings including dessert. They had a lot of very nice give aways. Everyone in our group went home with a prize... We had a safe ride back to the campgrounds and enjoyed a nice campfire at the Harveys camp site. Patti even had a cherry slush from Sonic hand delivered to her site! :)
Sunday a.m. we got up and folded up campers and tent and headed back towards Iowa. It was 63 degrees and sunny and became cloudy and cooler as we got closer to Iowa. We had lunch at Toot Toot's in Bethany and was joined by Darl and Melissa Reed. They rode down and had lunch with us. We all arrived safely home, much drier than our ride down.
We heard that next year, they may plan to have their Spring Fling a weekend later, perhaps weather will be warmer. Will let everyone know as soon as we know.

A New Grandbaby!

Death Valley Ride

Jan and I were blessed with our first Grandchild this March 25th, 2008.
Her name is Ava Joy Lo DeGan. Jan and I flew out to Las Vegas about ten days ago to visit our son, JR, our daughter in law, Cindy and our precious new grand daughter Ava.
Well like any good father I thought I should spend some quality time with my son, so I suggested a bike ride out to Death Valley, and believe it or not the plan was okayed by the girls, so off we went. JR and I rented a couple of bikes and headed out towards Death Valley on a cool Las Vegas morning. When we finally got out of the Las Vegas area we headed towards California on Route 160. About 60 miles out took an old road named the “Old Spanish Highway” That road was wonderful, smooth, no traffic and plenty to hills and curves as we entered the small foothills that surround Death Valley. The temperature outside Death Valley was about 72 degrees, once we got into the valley it was 90 degrees.
The temperature record for April in Death Valley is 111 degrees. The desert was in bloom and all the cactus had large beautiful red flowers on them. We spent about 8 hours on the bikes and had a great day.

Breitbach's restaurant

For those of you that would like to keep track of how Breitbach's restaurant rebuild is doing, here is a link (thanks to Darl Reed)

http://flor2.com/BreitbachCountyDining.html

Restaurants

We received an email from Dennis Baber that Breitbach's restaurant in Balltown, in Northeastern Iowa is being rebuilt. It will be interesting to see how it comes out when they finish. It really had quite an ambiance, before the fire.

We also have heard a "rumor" that the Rumor Mill is being rebuilt in St. Charles. They were known for their pizza baked in cast iron skillets and were very good.
It was rated Excellent- HHHHH

Roadside Inn in Martensdale has very good prime rib and if you like tenderloins, it is one that is big enough to be shared between 2 people. Rated - HHHHH

We received an email from Dennis Baber that Breitbachs restaurant, located in Northeast Iowa, is being rebuilt in Balltown. If you have not been there, it was a very good ride to and place to eat, with an awesome view.
We also have received a “rumor” that the Rumor Mill is being rebuilt in St. Charles. It was known for Pizza prepared in cast iron skillets (very good and stayed hot until you were finished eating.) We had been there several times to eat before their fire last fall.
If you have rides, pictures or things to share, send us via email and we can add to our chapter Blog.
Until next time, enjoy the ride, be safe.
