This is our newest addition to our family, new grandson born February 10th. Maybe he will like to ride motorcycles too when he grows up!

Friendship Riders of Iowa
February 2008 Chapter Director Notes
FEBRUARY 2008 IOWA GWTA Chapter H Director notes
More snow!.... L Anxiously waiting for the ice to melt off the driveway and road so we can get the bike out to ride.
We went to Minneapolis the first weekend of this month to the Motorcycle show. We rode up with several from the chapter on the Garvis bus and had a great time. If you are looking for a motorcycle this is the place to go. You can sit on the bikes and about all the brands were there.
We had our chapter meeting on February 9th at Felix and Oscars on Merle Hay road. 14 members were present with 4 visitors. Several members had traveled south where it was much warmer!
We checked on Chicago Speakeasy and Bonanza as options for our March Saturday meeting but neither have the meeting room available on Saturday evenings. Our next chapter meeting will be at Okoboji Grill on 86th ST @ 6:30 p.m.
Dennis and Donna Pittman have chapter shirts for sale. Our chapter patch is available @ $5.00 per patch. Thank you to Bill and Bette Reese for doing the patches.
Pam and Bob Beverage donated two items for auction as a way to raise chapter funds. One was a wooden game box and the other mystery bag (had pop and water in it!) We made $55.00 for our chapter. Thank you Pam and Bob for the donation.
We discussed our 2008 Christmas party. Steve is going to check on Country Kitchen to see if their room is open the first or second Saturday in December. If anyone has a suggestion for somewhere else, please let us know.
Motorcycle Safety Forum is March 14th at the Sheraton on 50th and University in West Des Moines. Several plan to attend. This is a very valuable way to give your input and ideas on how to make motorcycle riding safer. There is a good speaker, great meal and vendors there. Please check with Dennis Pittman if you have questions or how to register, if you would like to attend.
Randy Nelson and Jen Lipe are our current Region C directors. Region C reunion will be at Nebraska City, Nebraska. Flyers are to be available soon.
For Region C, Iowa is to sell 50/50 tickets on Saturday for 3 hours. This time will be divided up between all the chapters in Iowa. Each chapter is to donate (3) items for dirty bingo and one nice item for auction. If you can help get items for this, we would appreciate it.
Donna Pittman is our raffle ticket coordinator. Tickets are now available to sell. If every person bought or sold $10.00 worth of tickets, it would help national, regional and state, plus you would have a chance to win a motorcycle or cash.
Iowa had its state meeting. The Iowa GWTA officers are:
State Directors; Rick and Patti Harvey
Assistant State Directors: Steve and Connie Patton
Treasurer: Dee and Bill Kirkpatrick
Secretary/Email Coordinator: Sherrill Ress nanaress@aol.com
Safety Directors: Dennis and Donna Pittman
Iowa Fun Fest: is August 22 and 23rd. and will be held at Storm Lake, Iowa. Patti is looking for an idea or drawing to be used for the flyer. Please submit to Sherrill if you have something. For Fun Fest, each chapter is to donate (3) items for auction. Again, if you can help us get these, it would be greatly appreciated.
If you are interested in working on your safety patch, please contact Dennis Pittman for more information.
We have a new blog, check it out at http://iowachapterh.blogspot.com If you have something you would like to put on there, let us know; like a great road to ride, or a trip or restaurant that you enjoyed, anything that we can share with each other.
If anyone has suggestions or ideas on what you would like to see the chapter do, please let us know.
Everyone be safe and look forward to riding soon.
Your Chapter director

Reviewing 2007 riding season
Continued
Memorial weekend is always a ride and sometimes campout somewhere. We rode to middle Missouri and because of the rain and hard to find a camp site, stayed in a motel. The weather held out for us.
Jerry and Jan invited us to their house for a wonderful meal and games in the back yard. We thank them for their hospitality.
June was a combination of Region C reunion at Galesburg, Illinois with a theme of Never Ending Story. We had several attend and Dennis and Donna were able to camp. We had fun and they did a great job with our Chapter H display of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Steve and Connie, Bill and Dee, Rick and Patti and George and Peggy all left from there and began vacation to the Upper Peninsula Michigan and visiting Mackinac Island. An interesting place that does not allow motorized vehicles; so you walk, use horses or bicycle. It has a fort with quite a history and filled with shops and food. It was an enjoyable day. It was extremely hot in the 90's which is unusual for that time of year, so they said. We did find out that their state bird must be the mosquito :)
July was just as busy. Dennis and Donna Pittman are back riding and go with us to Goldrush XX. Bill and Dee, Rick and Patti, Stan and Tammi are also there. We were joined by Ben and Sherrill Ress at the camp grounds. It was a birthday party and we had a great time. We checked out a ghost town. Truly, we were the only ones there were us and the prairie dogs, and the ..ghosts! We enjoyed the ride but again, the weather was extremely hot! There was a lot to see and do at the convention and some time to ride. We even made it to the dance. The girls found it interesting riding the back of the bike in skirts! :) Region C did great and brought home some special awards.
August was our Iowa State Funfest at Winterset. Friday evening was a hotdog cookout. Saturday was a great ride, then back to campgrounds for games, auction, food and friendship. Again, we had a great time!

Reviewing 2007 riding season
2007 continues
Another ride that we participated in was a new one. Southern Iowa counties along with Terrible's Casino raised awareness of Southern Iowa and raised money for Operation First Response. The ride covered some interesting places in various small towns in several counties. The ride ended up at the casino with an auction, food and awards. They gave us Casino bucks to use as well. check out www.operationfirstresponse.org for more info!
Melissa Reed got a new (to her) 1800 Goldwing Trike. Jerry Degan got a new Harley this year. Gene Mullen got a touring Harley and has been gone riding ever since! Stan and Tammy have joined us in riding some this year, but had some time off due to visual difficulties.
May started our weekly Monday night rides. We left from the Shoppers parking lot at 6:30 p.m. and rode to our supper destination taking the long route. We found some good places to eat and a few we may not visit again. The rides and visiting with our GWTA family is always fun. We really enjoyed pizza baked in cast iron skillets at the Rumor Mill in St Charles, but it burned down the first part of 2008, not a good start for them.

As I review the past year, 2007 was full of a lot of fun times and meeting new friends. That is what GWTA is all about.
Chapter H was created the end of January, 2007 and has been growing and busy ever since.
March had a Motorcycle Safety Forum put on by the State of Iowa. Connie, Dennis and Donna Pittman attended. This was a very informative and valuable forum because you are participating and adding your comments and thoughts about what could make motorcycle riding more safe. It was filled with speakers, venders and a really good lunch, and is free to Motorcyclists. Would recommend anyone attend in 2008. The event is being held at the Sheraton on 50th on March 14, 2008.
We started out in the Spring, in April, camping at Onawa KOA and riding up to check out camping for Goldrush in Sioux Falls, SD. We were glad we did! The fairgrounds shower and bathrooms were not really very nice.
Dennis and Donna Pittman were not able to go because our very first planned ride was to GWTA's Kansas City Spring Fling. We were going camping. As they were getting ready to get on the bike, Dennis stepped off and twisted his knee. While at the ER, he was having a heart attack and had to have stents placed and let his knee heal. Someone was watching over them, so they were not on the road on the bike pulling the camper when his heart attacks occurred. Rick and Patti, George and Peggy, Bill and Dee and we camped at Watkins Mill in Missouri and then rode on to the ride. It was a pretty nice day and we had a long ride. We were surprised to see Jan and Jerry there when we returned from the ride. They had a great meal and auction and prize give away. We had a great time and really enjoy their Spring Fling.
We attended a welcome party for the new chapter, Chapter J in Essex. We camped at Lake Victoria and found out that the Bunkhouse will withstand some very strong winds! We were in near tornado winds. A town nearby had some interesting teapot water towers and great breakfast! Dee was trying to read during the storm and was rudely interrupted by her awning falling in on her by the wind!

Chapter meeting in March
Chapter H meeting in March
I checked on Chicago Speakeasy and Bonanza and neither will let us reserve their room on a Saturday night. I had to go to Okoboji Grille on 86th for Saturday, March 15th at 6:30 p.m. Let me know if that works for the Chapter.
Thanks
Steve

Friendship Riders of Iowa
February 9, 2008
Chapter H had it's February meeting at Felix and Oscars. We had 18 present. Several of our members were not able to be present. Some were in the South, enjoying warm weather. Stan and Tammy started out but icy roads changed their minds. We enjoyed a salad and pizza buffet. We had a short meeting that followed.
There were pictures floating around of Steve, Bill and Dennis on a Harley with side car that was taken at the Minneapolis bike show last weekend. We had a great time at the event. If you are looking for a motorcycle and not sure what kind you want, this is the place to go. You can sit on and check out several brands of motorcycles.
New members, Bill and Bette Reese were present and brought our chapter patches. Patches are available for $5.00 a piece.
Our next meeting will be March 8th, location to be determined.
We received an email from PJ Sesker expressing deep gratitude for the donations of quilts and slippers for Operation First Response.
We had two items that were donated by Bob and Pam Beverage. A mystery bag and a wooden box with game boards in it. $55.00 was taken in from the auction of these items. Next meeting we will have an item for auction to help our chapter treasury.
Dennis and Donna Pittman have more of our Chapter shirts. If you ordered some more or would like to purchase a shirt, please contact them.
Dennis Pittman is our Chapter and the State Safety Director. He told us about the State of Iowa Motorcycle Safety Forum that is held in Des Moines, at the Sheraton on 50th Street, on Friday, March 14th. Admission is free. There will be speakers, and a meal and attendees will participate in some safety brainstorming. It is a very good event to attend.
We were informed that Jack and Joyce May are now the Illinois State Directors. Congratulations to them. Also, Randy Nelson and Jenny Lipe are interim Region C Directors as Barb and Tom Johnson pursue another position in GWTA.
We are in the process of checking on a location for our 2008 Christmas party. We are hoping to be able to have it on the first or second Saturday in December.
We did take a group picture but with several of our members gone, we will be taking another picture at our next meeting. Remember to wear your Chapter shirts.
Region C Rally in June is our Family Tree, being held at Nebraska City. There will be more to come after the Region meeting coming up next weekend. More to come on this.
Until next time.
Stay warm and looking for a chance to ride
